What technology will bring to the next decade

Ten years ago, we would have been blown away by a cellphone with far more computing power and memory than the average PC had in 1999, along with a built-in camera and programs to manage every aspect of our lives. Ten years from now, the iPhone and its ilk will be antiques.

Over the next decade, the evolution of computing and the Internet will produce faster, increasingly intelligent devices. More of our possessions will contain sensors and computers that log our activities, building digital dossiers that augment our memories, help us make decisions and tame information overload.

Such ideas may sound futuristic and excessive today, and technological predictions are notoriously off-base. Short-term forecasts tend to assume too much change, and long-term forecasts underestimate the possibility of sudden, major shifts.

Microsoft Security Essentials: the new free antivirus

Today Microsoft had launched the all new, much hyped, and most of all, free antivirus software, dubbed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). It is available for Windows XP, Vista and 7; in both 32-bit and 64-bit.

microsoft security essentialsLast June, Microsoft had initially launched the beta version, and responses are mostly positive. Even AVG Technologies stated that MSE is an ideal free antivirus for Windows users.

MSE replaces Windows Live OneCare (once a free antivirus which failed to capture the market) and Windows Defender (which only deal with spyware and malware).

Coffee table is universal remote control

We all have a little bit of sci-fi dream inside. Can’t deny that. We’ve all seen how Hollywood pictured a single device control every tiny bit inside the house. Now here’s something that might just be it. Except that it is only a coffee table, and it controls only the living room.

Introducing CRYSTAL (Control of Remotely Interfaced Systems using Touch-based Actions in Living spaces), a recent research project that tries to create a unique bonding between devices in a room.

The main idea is having a single device to control everything in a room from lights, fans, TV, sound system, to digital frame, while you’re comfortably sitting in your couch.
