Four Facebook features I wish existed but don’t

Jul 28 2009

Facebook is a powerful website for social networking (which is another term for “waste a lot of time.”) But even with its numerous features and applications (which is another term for “viruses”), there is a lot of room for improvement. Having been a user of Facebook for many years, I’ve come up with a list of four features that I’d like to see added.

1. Block Fucking Stupid Applications: When Facebook began introducing applications it was both wonderful and frustrating. Let’s face it: we’ve all been bitten by zombies on Facebook at least once as well as seen some of our friend’s Facebook pages literally littered with trashy applications. Word to the wise: we don’t care which Disney character we are anymore. That’s sooo LiveJournal. The “Block Fucking Stupid Applications” feature would do just that, automatically block all fucking stupid Facebook applications.

2. HateThe ability to Hate status updates: When people post status updates you have the option to “Like” them. But sometimes I don’t like them. Sometimes I hate them. And I want the power to tell everyone that I hate them.

Basic photography: understanding Aperture

Jul 26 2009

“How can I get that kind of shot? It looks really nice.”

I’ve got that question a lot from relatives and friends who just started photography. And I assume they’re getting DSLR means they want to, at least, get better pics than from a compact camera. But on DSLR, one is required to know how it works in order to shoot properly.

There are terms like shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, and some other stuffs that will scare point-and-snap amateurs away. But for the first one, I’ll start with aperture.

So, here’s an explanation of what aperture is. It is actually an opening of lens. If lens is a human eye, aperture is the iris. Its opening control how much light goes into the retina or the image sensor.

Testing Windows Vista speech recognition tool

I recently stumbled upon a video on a guy trying to write a short program in Perl using speech recognition tool built-in inside Vista. This clearly is a joke.

The end of megapixel race

Jul 20 2009

The more megapixel, the better. This is what average person believe in. Well, it may be true generally. But may not on some cases. It depends on who you are and what you need. Akira Watanabe, manager of Olympus Imaging SLR department, said “Twelve megapixel is, I think, enough for covering most applications most customers need” to ZDNet. What does he mean ?

The megapixel myth

Generally, there are 2 kinds of photographer, those who snap for fun and artistic shot (amateurs) and those who snap in a studio (professional). These professionals prefer camera with more MP because they need it for large size prints. With higher MP, the larger one can print because higher MP means smoother image.

Is Hell exothermic or endothermic ?

Jul 16 2009

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington engineering mid-term. The answer was so “profound” that the Professor shared it with colleagues, and the sharing obviously hasn’t ceased…

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or Endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote Proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law, (gas cools off when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:
